Welcome to our TAKE2 profile page.

We’re committed to tackling climate change. That’s why we’ve made the TAKE2 pledge. Check out the work we’ve been doing to reduce our emissions and our plans for the future.

Our pledge

Gippsland Water is committed to preparing for the future and protecting our environment.

By working with the broader water industry and delivering on the state government’s Take 2 pledge program, we will mitigate the effects of climate change.

We have pledged to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by over 24% by 2025. This is the equivalent of taking almost 800 cars off the road.

In March 2017, we submitted our pledge to state government, nominating that by 1 July 2025 our reported emissions will be no more than 32,080 t CO2-e y-1

This commitment equates to a 24% reduction compared to our baseline of 42,021 tCO2-e y-1.

    Our stories

We currently source almost 30% of our energy from renewable sources, including a hydro-electrical generator at the Pine Gully Reservoir and a biogas cogeneration facility at the Gippsland Water Factory.

To date, we have implemented a number of energy-saving initiatives, including the installation of:

    • Timed, sensor-lighting in our offices and low-energy LED lights in a number of buildings and wastewater treatment plants.
    • More efficient surface aerators on our wastewater treatment lagoons.
    • A more efficient Turbo Blower at the Moe wastewater treatment plant
    • A 27kw solar power system at the Tyers Water treatment plant.

By 2025 fugitive emissions from our wastewater treatment plants will be fully offset by reforestation projects totalling over 180 ha at our Dutson Downs property. This project will provide multiple benefits by improving the health of the Gippsland Lakes catchment, providing habitat for local flora and fauna and capturing significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

All of our actions to reduce or offset emissions are based on local solutions that support or provide employment and economic benefits to our region.
